Taking saxagliptin (Onglyza)

Dear Patient,
Your health care provider has prescribed saxagliptin to treat your diabetes. This drug lowers blood sugar by helping increase the insulin level in your body after meals. The brand name of this drug is Onglyza.

How you'll take saxagliptin
Take this drug about the same time each day. You may take it with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole; don't cut, crush, or chew it.

What to do if you miss a dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for the next dose, just skip the missed dose. Don't try to "make up" doses. Don't take more than one dose per day.

What to do about side effects
Notify your health care provider if you experience side effects to this medication. Side effects are usually mild if they do occur.
Less common: headache, upper respiratory infection, urinary tract infection, swelling of the hands and feet.

What you must know about other medications
There are many drugs that could cause problems if you combine them with this drug. You may experience increased levels of saxagliptin if you take it with ketoconazole, atazanavir, clarithromycin, indinavir, itraconazole, nefazodone, nelfinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir, or telithromycin. Consult your health care provider before you take any medications, herbal preparations, or over-the-counter medications. Tell any health care provider who takes care of you that you're taking this drug.
