Taking lacosamide

Dear Patient,
Your health care provider has prescribed lacosamide to control your seizures. The brand name of the drug is Vimpat.

How to take lacosamide
Take this drug twice each day. You may take it with or without food.

What to do if you miss a dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Don't try to make up doses.

What to do about side effects
Notify your health care provider if you experience side effects to this medication.
Common: depression, dizziness, double vision, headache, nausea.
Less common: balance problems, blurred vision, diarrhea, fatigue, itching, memory problems, sleepiness, suicidal thoughts, tremor, vomiting, walking disturbance.

What you must know about other medications
Tell any health care provider who takes care of you that you are taking this drug.

Special directions

  • Don't stop taking this drug; stopping this drug suddenly can cause serious effects.

Keep in mind

  • There's a risk for suicidal thoughts. Be alert for these thoughts. Call your health care provider if you have any such thoughts or increased depression or anxiety.
  • It isn't known if this drug could affect an unborn baby. You should use contraceptive measures while you are on this drug. If you should become pregnant while taking this drug, consult with your health care provider.
  • Keep all follow-up visits with your health care provider.
