Receiving telavancin (Vibativ)

Dear Patient,
Your health care provider has prescribed telavancin for the treatment of your skin infection. This drug fights infection by stopping bacterial cell growth. The brand name of this drug is Vibativ.

How you'll receive telavancin
You'll receive this drug by I.V. infusion daily for 7 to 14 days.

What to do if you miss a dose
If you miss a dose, you'll receive a dose as soon as possible.

What to do about side effects
Notify your health care provider if you experience side effects to this medication.
Common: foamy urine, nausea, taste disturbance, vomiting.
Less common: abdominal pain, decreased appetite, diarrhea, itching, pain or redness at the infusion site, rash.

What you must know about other medications
This medication isn't known to interact with other drugs.

Special directions

  • Before taking this drug, tell your health care provider if you have a history of kidney or heart problems.
  • Your health care provider may monitor your various blood test results while you're taking this drug.

Keep in mind

  • It's unknown how this drug could affect a nursing baby. Because of the potential for side effects, another method of feeding the baby should be used.
  • It's unknown how this drug could affect an unborn baby. You should use contraceptive measures while taking this drug.
  • Notify your health care provider if you develop diarrhea or signs of infection (fever, chills, sore throat, cough).
