The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a single-dose emergency contraceptive known as Plan B One-Step. The tablet contains 1.5 mg levonorgestrel. It will be available without prescription to women age 17 and older and available with a prescription to women younger than age 17. In addition, the FDA announced a change in the labeling of the standard two-dose form of Plan B. Since August 2006, this form of Plan B has been available without prescription to women age 18 and older and with a prescription to women younger than age 18. In both cases, the ages will now drop to 17. The two-dose Plan B contains two 0.75-mg tablets that are taken 12 hours apart. |
