Escitalopram After Stroke

In a randomized trial of 129 patients who had had a stroke within the previous 3 months, researchers found that those who received a 12-month course of the antidepressant escitalopram showed more improvement in global cognitive functioning—specifically verbal and visual memory—than patients randomized to receive problem-solving therapy or a placebo. The beneficial effect of escitalopram was independent of its effect on depression.
Treatments are most helpful when given during the first few months after a stroke, when spontaneous recovery is most likely to occur. The authors concluded that more research should be conducted on the effects of antidepressant treatment after stroke. (Arch Gen Psychiatry, 67[2]: 187-196)
