The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that it will team up with Vanderbilt University and a large group of managed health care providers to study the effects of prescribed medication in pregnant women and their children. About two-thirds of women who give birth take at least one prescription drug while pregnant. Because of ethical concerns, however, very few clinical trials have tested the safety of drugs in this population.
   To help overcome this knowledge deficit, researchers will review maternal and pediatric records from 11 clinical sites covering about 1 million births from 2001 through 2007. The research program will link health care information for mothers and their babies in each of the participating research sites. FDA officials hope the study findings will help guide regulatory policy and influence medical practice.
