NEW WARNING
The Food and Drug Administration is revising prescribing information for sitagliptin (Januvia) and sitagliptin and metformin (Janumet) after there were 88 reported cases of acute pancreatitis in patients using these products. Two of those cases included hemorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis. Sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 enzyme inhibitor, is indicated to improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetes as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Health care professionals should monitor patients carefully for pancreatitis and discontinue these drugs if symptoms develop. Use of these drugs hasn't been studied in patients with a history of pancreatitis to see whether they're at increased risk for pancreatitis. These patients should be monitored closely.
