NEW WARNING
The Food and Drug Administration notified health care professionals that manufacturers of metoclopramide (Major Pharmaceuticals; Mutual Pharmaceutical Company, Inc.; Pliva, Inc.; and Teva Pharmaceuticals USA) must add boxed warnings to their drug labels about the risk of tardive dyskinesia with long-term or high-dose use. Tardive dyskinesia (involuntary, repetitive movements of the body) may be irreversible even after stopping the drug. Metoclopramide, also sold under the brand name Reglan, is used to treat GI disorders, such as delayed gastric emptying and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Manufacturers must implement a risk evaluation and mitigation strategy to make sure patients are given a medication guide that discusses this risk.
