NEW WARNING
Genentech has issued a "Dear Healthcare Provider" letter about several reported cases of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia in patients with solid tumors who were receiving bevacizumab (Avastin) in combination with sunitinib malate (Sutent). Use of bevacizumab in combination with sunitinib malate isn't recommended. The letter also included information about the safety of bevacizumab. Bevacizumab therapy has been associated with GI perforation, sometimes with intra-abdominal abscess. The drug should be discontinued in patients with GI perforation. Wound dehiscence has also occurred in patients receiving bevacizumab. Monitor postoperative patients closely and discontinue therapy immediately if wound dehiscence requiring surgical intervention occurs. Severe and sometimes fatal pulmonary hemorrhage can occur in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer treated with chemotherapy and bevacizumab. Avoid use in patients with recent hemoptysis. Permanently discontinue use in patients with serious hemorrhage and provide aggressive medical management.
